new uk anti child porn laws – how will they effect anime manga fans.

well, as of yesterday [6/4/10] the british goverment managed to rush through a set of laws that, although intended to protect minors, could and will have concequences far beyond that.

The Coroners and Justice Act [to use its official title] makes it illegal to possess “non-photographic visual depictions of child sexual abuse”. Those found guilty of possessing such material either in book or digital form will face a maximum of three years’ imprisonment and be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for possessing sexually themed cartoons.

for those of you who are interested here are the parts that effect
uk anime/manga fans

but how would this effect you the british anime and manga fan?

simply put it shouldnt – in theory.

firstly all anime series released in the uk is already heavily checked by the BBFC before its even released.

secondly all manga series that are published in english, and of which the majority are released by american companies, have already likewise been screened by their own equivelants in the us.

the problems arise if your either importing or downloading adult anime series, or, like Christopher Handley, who got his mail order of hentai doujinshi opened up – wham, go straight to jail.

so in summery:

*If you bought a dvd in the uk DVD thats passed by the BBFC, no worries – likewise Manga on sale in high street shops such as waterstones.
*If you bought a DVD released in the USA, its very unlikely to have a problem as they’ve had laws like this for 5 or so years [more adult titles though…]
*Import from Japan – that better not be a copy of bible black in that box customs opens…
*As always though, if yourDownloading…downloader beware!
